Platycerium bifurcatum (Staghorn Fern) is a fern belonging to the polypod family (Polypodiaceae). Its original habitat is Australia where it grows as an epiphyte in trees. The plant has two kinds of fronds: sterile and fertile. The sterile leaves slowly disintegrate and create humus from which the roots of the fern can acquire nutrients. The fertile leaves are lobed and resemble antlers. In warmer climates, it is found growing in the wild. In Europe, this plant is used as a houseplant. |
